Garden to Table: JUNE & JULY updates

As winter sets it we have been getting lots of veggies in the ground. All the rain means things are flourishing!

We have made some hearty winter food in the kitchen too; including soups, stir fries and pasta dishes.

Enviro: exploring the great outdoors!

Our Year 3 & 4 Kaitiaki students have been learning all about COMPOSTING and why it is so important and so useful.

They have created posters and Google slide shows to tell others about this too.

Our Enviro art team have made a fantastic start decorating our food scrap bins as you can see.

Meanwhile our Year 5 & 6 Kaitiaki have continued our focus on native trees by looking carefully at the trees we have in the school grounds. We are making 'scavenger hunts' for the whole school so everyone can learn about it too.

Some other Tui students also had a wonderful time exploring different materials from nature when they created these wonderful mandalas last week.

Tree for Survival Planting Day

On Wednesday 22nd June students from Year 5 and 6 travelled to Clevedon to plant native trees as part of the Trees for Survival programme.

We had been growing these at school since last September. We had nurtured these plants to turn them from tiny seedlings into small trees now over 30cm tall.

We planted karamu, cabbage trees, flax, mahoe and manuka.

We also visited the trees we planted last year which was a big highlight.

The students also enjoyed feeding the eels, seeing the horses and playing with the farm dogs.

Moth Plant Pod competition

Last week we went to Farm Cove Intermediate School for the Enviro meeting for Term 2.

We were going to find out the result from the moth plant pod competition.

We had spent a lot of time collecting these pods and small vines over the last few months so we were hopeful that we would get a prize.

Either way we feel proud we have helped the environment and got rid of so many of these pest plants.

We were excited to hear we came 4th and won $140 cash too!

Miss Long is thinking of doing a celebration morning tea for all those in the team.
