Minimising our waste in MANY ways!

We are passionate about reducing our waste to LANDFILL!

Today we we watched the awesome 'Savvy & the Stolen Recycling' show by A Fool's Company.

The play was really funny and a great reminder to recycle...

* HARD plastic with 1 - 2 - 5 on it  and plastic bottles

* Cans

* Glass

* Cardboard - like pizza boxes

Another way we are reducing our waste is by trying hard to have a wrapper free lunch.

It has been great to see some students who, back in term 1, found this a challenge and have now started having a wrapper free lunch every day!

💚 lots of healthy fruit and food bought in bulk

💚More fruit and popcorn and chips from a BIG packet

💚Mandarins, grapes and treats from BIG bulk packets

We also have some enviro superstars that have set up their own 'rubbish patrol' at lunchtime!

Well done Eden, Annie, Kimberley and team!

Celebrating Enviro Successes

This year all classes have been involved in our 'enviro challenge' initiative.

.

Classes collect points for helping the environment in different ways;

>  putting rubbish in the right bin

>  having a wrapper free lunch

>  picking up rubbish outside

And other special challenges that have popped up throughout the year - like bringing in items for SWAPtember or walking  / biking during our active travel week.

In assembly last week we celebrated seven classes
that have reached different enviro challenge milestones:

*  300 points (platinum level) earned by Room 1, 2 and 6

* 200 points (gold level) earned by Room 13, 8 and 17

* 50 points (bronze) earned by Room 11 - despite being at school for less than a term!

Room 12 recently reached gold level and celebrated this achievement by decorating gingerbread cookies!

Rewarding awesome enviro efforts!

We have had a great week celebrating some awesome enviro achievements.

This year we are running a school wide 'enviro challenge'.

Classes earn points for different enviro initiatives such as having a wrapper free lunch and putting rubbish in the right bins. Some students have helped their class earn bonus points by doing extra rubbish duty!

Room 1 and Room 6 have both now reached GOLD level by earning 200 points.  This week as their reward they voted to have a shared lunch.  They brought in some food to share but also had a few other treats provided; hot chips, herby breadsticks and some baking from jar mixes.

.

Room 2 has also recently reached GOLD level and they voted to have a class mufti day.

Congratulations also to Enoch from Room 2 - he has consistently demonstrated his commitment to our school enviro initiatives by always being wrapper free. He did a wonderful piece of persuasive writing to further convince me he deserved some vouchers for PARADICE.

2025 Enviro Challenge

 This year, we have a brand new challenge to ALL the classes...

become the ultimate

ENVIROSCHOOLS CLASS!

This new challenge links in with our waste minimisation focus.

Classes earn points for :

* Being wrapper free

* Making sure rubbish is in the correct coloured bins for our weekly check

* Picking up rubbish

When a class has earned 50 points they have reached BRONZE level. They receive a class certificate in assembly and a small reward.  Nearly ALL classes school wide have already earned this status!
Each class voted on a suitable reward, most classes chose ice cream.

The next challenge is to earn 100 points - silver level.

Congratulations to Room 7, 6, and 1 that have ALREADY reached this level!

Some enviro students wrote and shared a play in assembly to promote this initiative further.

Great work Aira, Myra, Lyla and Kimberly!

GARDEN TO TABLE 2025

 Our well regarded Garden to Table programme is BACK for 2025!

Room 4 and Room 3 classes have sessions this term.

Some of their activities and learnings so far include:

* How the new hot composting system works - and collecting 'greens' and 'browns' for it

* Planting from seed

* Vegetable and herb identification

* Identifying weeds and removing them

* Naming garden tools

After all students had done a 'knife safety' refresher lesson they were straight back into cooking!

We have started with some firm favourites to get us back into the swing of things with recipes such as:

*  Herby breadsticks

* Chocolate bliss balls

* Greens & cheese fritters

* Brownies

All recipes are available - click on the link HERE or just ask Victoria or Miss Long.

Enviro Stall for Term 4

At the end of each term we hold an 'enviro' stall.

Why?

* To showcase and sell 'cookie mix in a jar' - a fun and easy way to BAKE and be WRAPPER FREE!

It also makes a great Christmas gift.

* To enjoy some yummy home baking!

* To pick up a bargain - 2nd hand lunchbox, beeswax wrap or some fresh veggies from the garden.

Everything we sold was from one of the jar mixes;

            - Choc chip cookies

            - Gingerbread people - great this time of year!

            - Chocolate Brownies

            - AND also some herby breadsticks - a Garden to Table favourite.

This also uses up bread left from the recent school disco #lovefoodhatewaste

We raised $265. We hope to put this towards an enviro trip next year.

THANK YOU Paradice

 For a few years now we have been lucky enough to have received vouchers from PARADICE to hand out as Enviro prizes. These are handed out as part of our 'Wrapper Free' initiative. If your name is pulled out the prize draw then you win 2 vouchers for ice skating, mini golf or laser tag!

To thank our wonderful sponsors Paradice for their support we made a poster to present to them.

Wrapper Free Lunchbox Projects

 This year we have trialled a number of different projects to promote having a

WRAPPER FREE LUNCH!

Term 1: Each class had a 'tick chart' and ticked their name each time they were wrapper free. At the end of each '5 week block' (half a term) names were randomly selected to win prizes.

Term 2: We formed an enviro group that followed the action learning cycle and identified soft plastic as one area we could still focus on as a way of reducing our school waste. The students came up with different ideas then voted... the 'Enviro Scavenger Hunt' was the most popular.

The enviro group students created posters. These were then put up around the school showing different lunchbox items. They students had to answer questions about what was in the image;
 e.g. How many different rainbow fruits were in the lunchbox?
How much are the Cookies in the Jar mix that we sell?

Term 3: Our focus this term was promoting having healthy food in our lunchboxes as we saw many students didn't seem to have much fruit and vegetables for lunch.
The 'Rainbow Lunchbox Challenge' started!

Each week students had to have a different 'rainbow coloured' fruit and vegetable in their lunchbox. If they did; they showed a monitor, collected a slip and went in the prize draw for that week.

Prizes included books, 'Baking with a Buddy' vouchers, 2nd hand toys and double passes for Paradice Botany! These were a huge hit! A massive THANK YOU to Paradice Botany for giving our students a chance to skate, putt or laser tag!

Term 4: ??? The big question is, what do we do next?
Watch this space to see what our enviro students come up with!

Food Trip... around New Zealand!

  We have been learning about food from different places in the world.  The next part of this 'food trip' brings us back to New Zeal...
