Moth Pod Season!

Students have been asking me for weeks...

'When is the moth pod competition starting?'

And it's back! Our 6th year in a row entering it!

We have already made a fantastic start collecting over 1000 pods so far with over 30 students helping by bringing pods in or being part of our fantastic 'podding team' that has been out removing pods after school and at weekends!

These invasive weeds are a real PEST!

Their vine wraps around trees strangling and smothering the tree so it dies!

The sap is an irritant and stains clothes so we have to be careful when removing the pods; gloves, glasses and old clothes on!

Before...

After! Now we can see the actual plant!

WOW trip to Motuihe Island

On Sunday Aimee. Aurora and Miss Long visited Motuihe Island as part of a prize for collecting so many moth pods earlier in the year!

We travelled there on a very old boat - Ethel - she was built it 1896! There were 4 other boats too.

These are the other boats

We sat out on the deck and enjoyed the ride! It took quite a while! On the way we saw some little blue penguins in the sea.

Aurora helped put up the sail

To get ashore we had to go on a little boat called SEALEGS - it grows 'legs' (wheels) when it reaches the beach!

When we arrived we heard about the history of the island and how they have made it PREDATOR FREE and now lots of rare native birds live there - including KIWI! There's also Tuatara living there - we saw a tail of one as it disappeared down a hole!

Sadly Miss Long spotted a few moth pod growing! Even here! So it really is getting EVERYWHERE!
We need to keep up our work removing this pest weed.

We went on a big walk exploring some of the island

We saw big tree weta in here

This seagull had made a nest here and had 2 eggs

Huge thank you to...

Moth Pod Prize Giving: 2nd School

This week we attended the enviro schools meeting where the moth pod results were finally announced!

This competition is organised and supported every year by Howick Local Board.

We are regular competitors; we have now entered the competition for 6 years running and continually placed in the top 5.

We had a great team supporting us this year with 46 different families or community members collecting and bringing in pods for us.

Aimee, Aurora, Emily, Charli, Charli's Mum and Mr Earl came along to this event. The girls have been our top collectors this year and been out on many after school and weekend missions collecting pods.

We were excited when they started announcing the results and we found out we came...

 2nd SCHOOL!

We received a certificate, some prize money and took our photos with the cute native soft toy creatures.

Moth Pod Mania!

To help rid the Howick area of pesky weeds we have, again, entered the

HOWICK LOCAL BOARD MOTH POD COMPETITION.

This is always a very popular event with our students who love to get behind this initiative; it's great to see the number we have collected going up and up!

This year we have already collected over 10,000 pods and roots!

This is a great environmental action that gets you outside and exercising as well as helping the environment!

More than 1 in 10 of all our students have brought in moth pods.  Many, many more of the older students have been actively involved in searching for them at lunchtime, counting them and clearing them away after.

Year 3 / 4 Adopt A Park visit #1

This week we went for our first visit of the year to our 'adopted park' William Green Domain.

After we had checked on the native trees we planted last year (and removed / flattened some weeds around them) we had lunch and a play on the playground.

Levi had brought along some special lunch snacks; some edible seeds from a kahikatea tree. Everyone was keen to try them. They tasted quite sweet, some said they were like apple.

trying some kahikatea seeds

The next activity was a scavenger hunt going round trying to find different things in nature like our four whānau trees!

We also collected some harakeke seeds. Levi will look after these and we hope we can pot them up then eventually plant them at the park!

spotting koru and cabbage trees

We also talked about different kinds of weeds; the ones round our native trees, others that the bees like, taro and the dreaded moth plant pod!

We managed to find a lot of tiny moth plant pod growing and removed about 200 seedlings growing. We removed many big pods last year and we were pleased to see there weren't too many more!

"I liked the scavenger hunt and looking for different birds and native trees" (Ruby)

" I liked learning about the new trees, like the tallest tree in New Zealand and how lots of different birds like eating it"  (Mila)

" I learnt that harakeke has seeds; I thought Tui just sucked the nectar. We collected heaps of the seeds which I really liked doing. I also found looking at the wasp nest interesting because it looked like it wasn’t really attached to anything. (Aimee)

" I liked collected the seeds and playing on the playground" (Issac)

"I wondered why we saw a dead fish in the stream..." (Kane)

Moth Pods are BACK!

This year we are, again, tackling the invasive weed MOTH POD!

The students are really excited to get out there pod hunting and help the environment!

Some senior students have made posters to put up around the school to remind everyone to bring them in.

One student made a flyer to add to people's letter boxes.

We talked about why moth pods are such a problem. The students had lots of ideas to share.

"They strangle other trees by wrapping around them"

" They hurt nature"

"They are bug (bee) and butterfly killers!"

Every pod or root we collect is worth 1 point! We are asking students to bring them into school for the local competition. We already have over 4000 points!

Podding play date over the weekend!

The big weekly pod count!

NEW Composting System!

Last week we were very excited to get a new composting system

A huge THANK YOU to Auckland Council for helping to finance this and to Carbon Cycle Compost for the awesome product!

This compost system will allow us to:

* Create compost faster

* Have a predator-free compost area

* Compost our weeds and those annoying small sticks we always find around!

Carbon Cycle Compost got all the students involved in helping to build the compost boxes.

The students said:

"It was tricky to get the level (of the wood) just right"

" It was so fun using the tools to make the boxes"

" The wood smells nice"

" We learnt how to prepare it like a sandwich with layers of greens and browns"

" Microscopic bugs help break down all the food scraps"

We need... one bucket of greens and one bucket of browns...

We also need water and the 4th ingredient... air!
This helps the 'FBI' (fungi, bacteria and invertebrates) break it all down

Enviro Successes

Our school enviro programme received a number of awards and accolades at the Howick Local Board enviro meeting this week.

We were very pleased to place 2nd school overall in the moth pod competition for the East Auckland area collecting a record 21 967 pods and roots.

We were awarded a certificate for our work on waste reduction. For the 5th year running we have successfully reduced our school landfill waste.

We have also received a certificate of recognition for beginning our journey calculating and reducing our school carbon footprint.

Adopt a Park 2024 Term 1

On Friday 22nd March the Year 3/ 4 Enviro Kaitiaki group had their first 'Adopt a Park visit for 2024!

We wanted to:

1) Get to know the park

2) Collect any moth pods

3) Pick up some rubbish.

Sadly we found a LOT of rubbish...and LOTS of moth pods!

We also saw a ginormous rat!

All the rubbish we found
Lots of rubbish... not a nice sight!

Some of the pods we found... making use of a disused food caddy bin!

Pod count for this week!

Our favourite things were...

making the park look clean and getting the rubbish

getting the pods over the stream

walking there

playing at the playground

trying to get those pods up really high and hard to reach - got them!

Food Trip... around New Zealand!

We have been learning about food from different places in the world.  The next part of this 'food trip' brings us back to New Zeal...
