Ready, Steady GO! Active Travel

We are gearing up for better weather and getting active by walking, biking and scootering to school. 

We are now focusing on a new enviro topic; ACTIVE TRAVEL. 

Room 7 

Our first session kicked off by thinking about what we already know and the benefits of using active travel to school. 

We loved trying the GIANT puzzle! The students worked really well as a team to complete it. Room 1 have the fastest time yet, 5 minutes and 27 seconds!

We are now running two WALKING SCHOOL BUSES during the week, a great way to reduce cars on roads, get active, walk with friends and spot some wildlife. Oh and WIN some great prizes!

Walking School Bus RECORD!

 ON Friday we had a RECORD number of people on our 

Walking School Bus! 

This runs every day down Patons Road past the playground. 

We have been running this every day since last year and the numbers have slowly grown.  Our term 2 numbers were up 31% compared to term 1. 

Walking to school is a great way to...

💚  get fresh air and see the nature all around us (we love seeing Luna the cat come to greet us!) 

💚 get exercise in the morning

💚  get cars off the road & lower car fumes

💚  socialise

17 students joined us this morning to walk to school

We also have another walking school bus running every Wednesday from the end of Angelo Avenue.

Get Active to Get to School!

 Every Wednesday we are encouraging & celebrating everyone who comes to school in an active way! 

That can be walking, biking or on your scooter. 

Live too far away?  

You could also get dropped off and join one of our WALKING SCHOOL BUSES! 

This Wednesday we had MAX the Pukeko come along in the morning to encourage everyone to get active getting to school!  

WHY Walk to School?

> Social

>  Less cars = safer roads

> Less cars = better for the environment & less car fumes 

AND you can WIN prizes in the Wednesday Challenge too! 

We were very excited to see so many students walking to school on Wednesday. 

We have had a 34% increase in walking school bus journeys this term compared to Term 1! 

We are about to start a second walking school bus from Angelo Avenue - near Pakuranga Highway end.

Safety Around Schools!

 Yesterday morning our awesome TRAVELWISE students were out promoting safe driving speeds around our school. 

We had some 'slow down' and 'watch your speed' signs the students were holding up. 

All vehicles should be doing 30 kph or under around schools so we had the speed radar checking speeds! 

WELL DONE parents and drivers using Willoughby Avenue - everyone was sticking to the speed limit. 

However, parents do need to remember not to stop on the double yellow lines - this is unsafe and can incur a $100 fine! 

It was great to see students walking to school or being dropped off a little further away and walking. This helps reduce car traffic around the school gate. 

We are now well into the WEDNESDAY CHALLENGE - a weekly nationwide challenge where students walk, bike or scooter to school and earn points and prizes for their class. Well done Room 1 - you are the winners this week. 

We are also excited about a SECOND walking school bus that will soon be starting up from Angelo Avenue - near Pakuranga Highway.  Get in touch if you are keen to join or can help us out.

WHAT IS IT?

This is a New Zealand initiative encouraging schools and workplaces to use sustainable transport every WEDNESDAY.

WHY IS IT A GOOD IDEA?

By walking, cycling, or busing, students reduce traffic and carbon emissions while improving wellbeing. 

HOW DOES IT WORK?

We log journeys via a web app to earn points, compete on leaderboards, and win prizes for our class and school.

We measured how everyone has been getting to school recently
so we know our starting numbers... now we have to try and improve on this.
