Enviro Art
After visiting other local schools we have decided we would love to design and make some signs to showcase the 'Enviro areas' of our school. These include the worm farm, composting areas and native trees to name a few. Here's the students testing out the 'upcycled' paint and laminate plastic we were gifted.
Waste Audit #2
As part of our commitment to reducing waste here at Howick Primary, we have done a waste audit to see exactly what rubbish we are sending to landfill.
From the first waste audit (completed last October) we found:
5.73kg (55%) of our rubbish could have been diverted from the landfill and, instead, been recycled or composted.
During the last 6 months, we have been educating everyone at our school about recycling and we have also set up a fantastic food composting system. We were hopeful that we would have made a difference and had less food scraps and plastic in our landfill bin.
And the results were in! This time only 2.74kg of our waste could have been diverted from landfill.
Our 'compostable' waste bin was nearly ALL tissues with hardly any food scraps! Also, our "soft plastics" waste had reduced, we hope, due to our big effort with 'Wrapper Free Wednesdays" which, we aim to, in time, to increase to more days of the week. Well done Howick Primary School!
