Water - Cultural and Religious Importance

 Water: Cultural and Religious Importance

Auckland STILL has a water shortage and water restrictions in place.

This year, we have been learning about the importance of water in everyday life and how useful it is.

This week the seniors have been looking the meaning of WAITAPU; holy or sacred water.

They have done some fantastic art pieces to reflect this.

We're Going on a Bat Hunt!

On Saturday 10th October we were lucky enough to be invited along to Hunua Ranges for a bat hunt!

This was organised by PEST FREE HOWICK and was a prize we won for our moth plant pod collecting earlier in the year.

Thanks to Ben the bat expert, and others, we learnt heaps about the NZ native long tailed bats (like they are the size of your thumb!) and we were lucky enough to spot some flying overhead at dusk.

We even managed to spot some kokāko - native NZ parrots.

It was fascinating to learn about all these native creatures; now we're keen to learn more about other native animals and learn how we can protect them.

Wonderful New World: New gardening supplies!

 Wonderful New World!

On the last day of term 3, some kind people from New World turned up and donated some “Little Garden” seedling pots, bags of soil and a garden bed for us to build and plant the veggies in. We really appreciate New World Howick. (Remember to go there!)

Here comes a fun thing to do next term with the gardening group!

Sausage Sizzle # 3: Reducing Our Landfill Waste!

 More "Zero Wasting"

Our wonderful waste crew, along with many other keen seniors have been busy again! Again, they have done a fabulous job of collecting and sorting waste at our recent sausage sizzle.

An extra WELL DONE to Charlie who went one step further and collected all classroom bins from senior classrooms and sorted their rubbish into the correct bins too!

The PTA continued their fabulous, mindful effort to buy 'low waste' products through bulk buying and environmentally friendly products.

Here's the data:

* Sausage sizzle #3 we collected:

- 7.84kg total of 'waste'

- 7.21kg of this was diverted from landfill (recyclable, compostable)

-  7.21kg/ 7.84kg = 92% diverted from landfill

EVEN MORE than last time!

The Hanging Plant

Here is how to make this cool bottle with a plant in it:
1. Find any bottle, a milk bottle will do too.
2. Cut up the top of the bottle.
3. Put some soil into the bottle.
4. Plant a seed in it.
5. Hang it up somewhere.
6. Water it and you did the hanging plant!!

Say NO to Landfill waste! Sausage Sizzle #2

 Diverting Waste From Landfill!

Our Senior Enviro Team, along with many other keen seniors have done a fabulous job of collecting and sorting waste at our recent sausage sizzles.

The PTA is also doing a great job of buying 'low waste' products (bulk, environmentally friendly) and helping to reduce waste through their careful use of resources.

Here's the hard facts:

* Sausage sizzle #2 we collected:

- 5.47kg total of 'waste'

- 4.96kg of this was diverted from landfill (recyclable, compostable)

-  4.96 kg/ 5.47kg = 91% diverted from landfill

ready to go!

In action!

Some of our fabulous team!

Water Use

Water! This has been our lesson focus for the last 10 weeks in our Enviro WAI unit.

We have learnt:

* Water is EVERYWHERE - in our homes, schools, and all around us in nature (especially in Auckland!)

* Water is ESSENTIAL for life.

* Water has many uses; keeping us clean and healthy, for religious and cultural ceremonies and its HEAPS of fun to play in, on or by!

* Water is often polluted.

* Water is in short supply, we have a water shortage in Auckland and around the water there is not enough fresh water for everyone.

Here's some pictures of us measuring out the amount of fresh water in the world; 1 DROP out of 1000ml!

Enviro Art 2

Our Enviro Art group were really happy this week to receive a generous donation from Bunnings this week and make a start on our Enviro signs for the school garden. We used the money to buy primer, paint and brushes that the students had seen on the Bunnings website.
