Tree for Survival Planting Day

On Wednesday 22nd June students from Year 5 and 6 travelled to Clevedon to plant native trees as part of the Trees for Survival programme.

We had been growing these at school since last September. We had nurtured these plants to turn them from tiny seedlings into small trees now over 30cm tall.

We planted karamu, cabbage trees, flax, mahoe and manuka.

We also visited the trees we planted last year which was a big highlight.

The students also enjoyed feeding the eels, seeing the horses and playing with the farm dogs.

Moth Plant Pod competition

Last week we went to Farm Cove Intermediate School for the Enviro meeting for Term 2.

We were going to find out the result from the moth plant pod competition.

We had spent a lot of time collecting these pods and small vines over the last few months so we were hopeful that we would get a prize.

Either way we feel proud we have helped the environment and got rid of so many of these pest plants.

We were excited to hear we came 4th and won $140 cash too!

Miss Long is thinking of doing a celebration morning tea for all those in the team.

Enviro Art Competition - design our food scrap bins

Did you know over HALF of the contents of our landfill bins could be composted?

Food in landfills give off methane gases.

There is an easy solution to this problem - compost your food scraps!

When we did our waste audit recently, we realised some students weren't too sure what could go in the worm farm. This is what we found in the landfill bins:

We decided we need to add some more pictures to the sides of our compost bins. We did have some posters on the sides but they got all soggy and wet.

THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN HELP!

We need to come up with some designs for the bins.

We need to think about ...

            1) What can go IN the bin look HERE for some ideas. Use clear writing.

            2) Add some colourful pictures to make it clear

We are making this into an art competition for Year 3 - Year 6.

The best 16 designs get to be in an 'enviro art' group on Tuesdays (in school time) and draw the designs on the blue bins.

Get designing!

Howick Primary is FAMOUS and our first ever G2T BAKE SALE!

Exciting times at school as our Garden to Table featured on TV twice during May!

This was to promote Garden to Table and our first ever G2T bake sale!

Click HERE to see the video of filming session #2 Wednesday 25th May.

We made so many delicious treats on the Wednesday in preparation for our first ever G2T bake sale.
It was a huge success and we made $580.

We used produce from the school garden (and other peoples gardens!) to make cakes, muffins, biscuits, slices and more!

Available to buy were: feijoa muffins, carrot cupcakes, beetroot brownies, kawakawa biscuits, see in the dark ANZAC biscuits, lemon slice,  cheesy herb bites and much more!

Garden to Table MAY UPDATE

Room 1 and 2 students have been super busy in the garden and have managed to plant in ALL areas!

Ka Pai!

They have been busy in the kitchen making herb scones, vegetable risotto and some baking in preparation for our first ever G2T bake sale!

This is a bake sale with a difference; the ingredients come from the garden AND the students are the ones making it!
