Trees For Survival 2021

 Round 3 with our Trees for Survival! 

What is Trees for Survival?

This is a nationwide programme that works with schools to help plant native trees on farms.

This helps to stop soil eroding and polluting our waterways and bring back more native wildlife to our countryside. 

EDIT TO ADD... Awesome 'real life' maths today counting how many of each tree we have to plant! 

We have approximately 1000 native seedlings to plant.

Today we had to count up what we had been given...

  

1) Count how many spaces there were in each seedling tray ...20 by 10 (= 200) 

2) Then count and record for each row of 20 how many seedlings did NOT germinate. 

3) We wrote this down and it gave us 10 different numbers to add together.  We used compatible numbers to help us add! 

4) Lastly we had to subtract this number from 200.  Example; 87 Manuka did not germinate. That means we have 200 - 87 = 113 Manuka seedlings to plant. 

This week our bubble students did an amazing job starting the process of 'potting up' our native trees.

They put the potting mix soil into 100's of bags ready for the tree seedlings to be planted in.

 Food coming from overseas has a negative impact on the environment. 

This is as a result of the energy required to get it to us here in New Zealand.

FOOD MILES - WHERE DOES MY FOOD COME FROM? 

Ask an adult if you are allowed to look at some of the tins and packets in your cupboard at home. 

>> Take a range of tinned foods and packets out.

>> Most food labels in NZ say the country of origin - the place where the food was made, processed or packaged. 

>>  Have a look and see how many different countries your food has come from. 

>> It can be written in different ways so read carefully! 

>> Share some of your answers in the comments box below.  

Here's some of mine ...

- Water Crackers - Made in Australia 🇦🇺 

- Watties Beans - Made in NZ 🇳🇿

- Chickpeas - Produced in Italy 🇮🇹 

Remember - it is always better to buy local food - it's fresher and better for the environment

LOCKDOWN Enviro Challenge #3 Take Action and WIN!

Want to help the environment AND earn a medal for doing it?

Even from your own backyard you can still help the environment! 

The Department of Conservation (DoC) would love to reward you for this by giving you a 

really cool medal for your efforts- all for FREE! 

All you have to do is choose what action from the list HERE that you would like to do. 

There's heaps of different ideas such as making a lizard lounge or growing a plant from a seed. 

Those of you that came tree planting and / or helped with the moth plant pod collecting can already claim yours! Just fill in the details online to get it sent to you.

LOCKDOWN Enviro Challenge #2 Baking Time!

Everyone knows lockdown is the perfect time for baking! 

Have a go at making something that will be perfect as a LITTERLESS lunch snack.

I know a few of you have already been busy in the kitchen. 

Our go to; BLISS BALLS. 

 

Here's out latest creation - thanks to Aiden & Dylan's mum for these.

THREE reasons we LOVE making bliss balls...

1) They are, basically impossible to make wrong - you just chuck it all in the blender! (add more dry or wet ingredients as needed) 

2) Use your imagination! You can make 100's of different versions. 

3) Get everyone involved! Everyone can help roll them into balls. You can pop them in the fridge if you don't get round to making them into balls until later.

This awesome activity is for any age and a fantastic way to really

enjoy the beauty of nature.

“Nature, the more you see it, the more you love it”

Being outside, in nature is SO good for you, and SO interesting! Get out there!  It can be your own garden or around your area.

ENVIRO Challenge 1:  Find leaves, petals or other plants in a range of rainbow colours.

Please collect fallen ones; NOT from peoples gardens!

Y 3/ 4 Kaitiaki get RECYCLING!

 Term 3 Week 2 the Year 3 & 4 Kaitiaki helped to sort out all the products we have been collecting ready for special recycling. These items can't go in our regular yellow recycle bin but you can post them or drop them off to companies that can recycle them. 

This includes Dulco Gusto coffee pods and pens that can be recycled through Terracycle,

Bread Tags for Wheelchairs NZ is the company that processes the plastic from bread tags. There are various people on Facebook that are the collection points.
